Lord Gilbert served as a Government Minister in the UK under three Prime Ministers. He was Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1974 – 1975), Minister of Transport (1975 – 1976) and Minister of State for Defence (1976 – 1979 and 1997 – 1999).He has been member of a number of Select Committees of the House of Commons, including Expenditure, Defence and Trade and Industry.
